Onboard Camera Fitment (Top Yoke)

25/6/2017

Despite running our front-facing camera with great results since the start of the 2015 season, changing rules mean that many race clubs (including NG and ThundersportGB - amongst others) no longer allow cameras to be fitted to front fairings. Instead, the front-facing camera needs to be situated somewhere behind the screen.

The camera to be relocated
With our next event being with the NG club, we thought it was time to relocate the camera - instead of missing the opportunity to record what is ahead of us!

We started by making a cardboard template to mockup what we wanted to wanted to achieve - and checked that our idea would work before we cut any metal.

With a couple of minor changes to the cardboard mockup we were happy to proceed, so cut a piece of 3mm alloy plate and started by using step drill bit to make the 28mm hole for the yoke splindle. The mount will be held in place by the top yoke nut and will have a couple of (foam backed) tabs to help keep the mount stable (and to keep the mount still whilst top yoke nut is tightened). The GoPro mount and J-bracket that was used whilst the camera was on the front fairing will be reused by this mount.

With the top yoke spindle hole drilled, a handsaw was used to shape the mount and then a file was used to tidy up the edges.

The next step was to drill the mount so that the GoPro mounting bracket could be securely bolted to it. A small additional hole was also added for the safety R-clip.

With a final file and polish of the bracket, it was ready to be bolted onto the bike. The mount is extremely solidly mounted to the bike, but with nyloc nuts being used to hold on the GoPro mount we do not envisage any issues arising due to vibration.

And now for the exciting part - the new camera mount will provide the following view. We can't wait to capture some new footage for you all now :-)
