For those of you who may have been wondering whether we got anywhere with our Summer Break Projects, we have some exciting news! The restoration of our 1989 Yamaha CG50 Jog is now complete!

A partial strip of the bike was performed in order to renovate the parts that were letting the bike down. First up was the wheels - these were shot-blasted and then powdercoated in white, before being treated to new bearings, inner tubes and tyres. We also managed to locate a NOS (New Old Stock) front brake plate so included that in our rebuild.

The original tail light was in generally good condition but with rust beginning to show through, we stripped the tail unit, masked off all non-metal parts, then sanded down the part. After all surface rust was removed (and we had cleaned and degreased the part) we applied Fertan to chemically treat the rust before applying primer, paint and lacquer. We were quite happy with the end result  :-)

The final major part that required attention was the rear rack. We managed to source a used part but it was in equally poor condition as our original rack, unfortunately. We enquired about having the part re-chromed but this ultimately proved uneconomical. Then we stumbled upon a supplier who could obtain a brand new item from Japan! So we placed our order and waited for two months - only to be advised that they could not supply the part. So we decided instead to get the rack powdercoated in a chrome finish, however, after the rack had been shot-blasted the powder coaters recommended that a nickel finish would look better (due to some underlying pitting in the metal), so we settled on the nickel finish.

All of the above parts, along with a NOS seat unit, were then simply bolted back onto the 1989 Yamaha CG50 Jog to bring it back to it's former glory! Have a look at some photos of the finished article below  :-)

With the 1989 Yamaha CG50 Jog restoration project now finished (and with plenty of time remaining until the start of our 2016 racing season), David Jnr will now be refocusing his attention to restoring our 1996 Aprilia RS125SP race bike - which brought us five championships - but has been neglected over the past couple of years due a housemove/new baby/other excuse... We believe that it deserves some more love!

We are hoping that the Aprilia RS125SP restoration will be completed before Christmas, so will provide a follow-up update soon...   :-)

And for those Honda CB750 F1 lovers out there, you might need to wait for early 2016 to get some further news - unless Dave Snr stops playing on his new Aprilia Tuono and does some restoration work instead...  ;-)
