Smile for the Camera...

For the upcoming 2014 race season we are considering carrying a secondary video camera on our Kawasaki ER6 Supertwin. Shown below is a 'proof of concept' video that was made whilst learning how to merge multiple video streams. This video is a comparison of flying laps around Darley Moor:

Kawasaki ER6 Supertwin (main video) versus Aprilia RS125 SP (small video)

There are numerous options for the positioning of a secondary camera, but the favoured options are:
  • A forward-facing wide-angle camera (i.e. "bum cam") which would allow the viewer to witness rider body position & movement of the rider over the machine whilst racing
  • A rearward-facing narrow-angle camera (i.e. the same type as the primary camera) which would allow the viewer to see what is happening behind ("look in the rear view mirror")

Both of these options have benefits to the rider/team; but at the moment, the rearward-facing narrow-angle camera is looking preferable. Technology-wise, we could merge three (or more!) video streams together, but I think that might be overkill!  ;-)

do you have to get permission from NGRRC to video races?

Yes you will need permission.

Nino at NG has said that they "need a letter stating you confirm it is only for personal use. Get the Chief Technical Officer at the meeting to counter sign it to say he is happy with the fixing of it on the machine."

I have previously used a document for this approval (for carrying an onboard camera at Darley Moor), so have sent a modified copy of this to Nino to check that it is sufficient.

If you send an email to dsc88dsc88@hotmail.com, then I can send you a copy of the document.

All the best, David
